The PXG M16 putter shaft takes the great stability of PXG’s putters to an even higher level. Stealthy looks. Solid, unflinching feel.
Introduction
When I got an email from PXG announcing the launch of a new product, I was not expecting a putter shaft. In truth, I would have needed several dozen guesses before I got in the right ballpark. But for a company that’s already pushed the boundaries of putter design, it makes sense. I took the new PXG M16 putter shaft for a spin in two of their Battle Ready models, the Closer [review HERE] and Bat Attack [review HERE], to see what it can do.

Looks
Many premium putter shafts scream for attention with unique colors and bold graphics. PXG has taken the opposite approach with the M16 putter shaft, making it as stealthy as possible. The upper portion of the shaft is matte black graphite without a single logo or graphic. Roughly seven inches from the putter head, the shaft transitions seamlessly to shiny chrome. Unlike the Breakthrough Stability Shaft [review HERE], there is not a massive change in shaft diameter from the graphite to the steel.
Feel
You can pick any synonym for “solid” and it would be a fit here. The PXG M16 putter shaft is sturdy, stable, sound, and substantial. If you want any flex in your putter shaft, this is not for you. From short putts to long lags, the M16 keeps everything in line like a drill sergeant. I took it to the point of hitting cross-green putts off the extreme toe and heel but still couldn’t get this shaft to twist or wiggle.
Also, the thing that I’ve found with almost every graphite putter shaft is true here as well: the feel of contact is cleaner. You get a very clear sense of where the ball met the face and nothing else. There are no excess vibrations in your hands. This enhances feedback in a way that I find very helpful.
Performance
One goal of a premium putter shaft is to offer more stability and consistency compared to traditional steel. PXG cleared that bar with ease. A steel putter shaft has a butt frequency of 307 CPM. The PXG M16 putter shaft is over 25% stiffer – 386 CPM. Per PXG, their closest competitor is the Stability shaft at 352 CPM.
PXG achieved this performance jump by utilizing a mix of materials. The lower section of the shaft is steel, and the upper section blends high modulus carbon fiber with rubber and twenty-two steel wires.
On the green, this stability is easy to feel. The putter feels like it’s right there with you no matter what you do. However, the improvement versus steel is hard to quantify without technology. Thankfully, PXG always comes with the data. In their testing, they showed that the M16 putter shaft got the ball to zero skid 2.5″ faster than steel. Additionally, there was over 60% less variance in face rotation on centered strikes and and approximately 33% less on toe strikes.
Finally, PXG achieved this stability without bloating the butt section of the shaft. The outer diameter of the M16 putter shaft is a traditional .600, so it will feel the same in your hands as any steel shaft.
Conclusion
PXG was already among the leaders in making consistent, stable putters. They’ve now given themselves an unfair advantage with the addition of their exclusive M16 putter shaft. This shaft is a substantial improvement over steel putter shafts, and you can feel that difference on the greens.

I’ve used stability for almost 3 years now and absolutely love it. Ordered M16 last week and it should be in within the week to be installed into my Dagger C. Getting very excited now!
You trying to sell that wide blade with that shaft in it?
Brandon,
You can buy The Closer with an M16 from PXG’s website.
Best,
Matt
What’s the difference between this shaft and Odyssey’s ?
Odyssey does not make any performance claims about the Stroke Lab shaft, at least as far as I have heard. I do not believe it is anywhere near the M16 in terms of low torque and stability.

Is this shaft available to fit Cameron putters?
Terence,
This shaft is only available in PXG putters at this time.

PXG Mustang , Honma Tour and Muria putters have Stability shafts for 3 years with very good results. Looking forward to installing an M16 shaft in my Dagger soon.
I honestly did not think a putter shaft could make a significant difference in my putter. For the heck of it, I tested the new M16 shaft while at the PXG store testing drivers. I was shocked at the difference in feel and stability, especially on longer putts. I never thought I would pay more for a putter shaft; however, I must say it is worth it. Realizing that the putter is the most used club in my bag and that the putter has the biggest single impact in my score, it makes sense to get the putter that allows me to score the best.
Did you have the same distance control issues with the m16 that you did with the fujikura x-firm?
James,
No, the M16 has been a solid choice for me.
Best,
