2025 Sony Open in Hawaii Recap

Nick Taylor Wins Sony Open in a Playoff

Honolulu, HI – Nick Taylor (-16) came out on top at the 2025 Sony Open in Hawaii, besting Nico Echavarria in a playoff.  Taylor chipped in for eagle on the 72nd hole to force a playoff.  On the second playoff hole, Taylor pitched it close with his third on the par 5 and tapped in for birdie while Echavarria floundered, three putting for par after putting it on the par 5 in two.  It is the fifth PGA Tour victory of Taylor’s career.

Finishing one stroke behind Taylor and Echavarria were 54-hole leader J.J. Spaun and Stephan Jaeger.  Eric Cole finished solo fifth, one stroke behind them at -14.  There was a group of four at -13: Jackson Suber, Adam Schenk, Patrick Fishburn, and Keegan Bradley.

The second event of the calendar year, the Sony Open represents a unique full-field opportunity for some of the game’s top players and many veterans and rookies alike.

Other players who had notable weeks included two-time winner last year, Nick Dunlap, PGA Tour rookie Jesper Svensson (both T10, -12); and last week’s winner Hideki Matsuyama and Gary Woodland (both T16, -11).

Many of the top players in the field, however, struggled and failed to make the cut.  This group included Si Woo Kim, Billy Horschel, Ben An, Corey Conners, Chris Kirk, and hotshot amateur Luke Clanton.  It goes to show that PGA Tour fields are deep and mediocre play won’t cut it on any given week.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads back to the mainland and the California desert for the American Express.  Last year’s edition featured Nick Dunlap’s historic victory as an amateur.  This year’s field includes the likes of Sam Burns, Patrick Cantlay, Wyndham Clark, Tony Finau, and Xander Schauffele.
