Phoenix, Arizona – Belgian golfer Thomas Detry captures his third professional win but his first PGA Tour victory. Thomas held off a wildly popular leaderboard at one of the most raucous PGA Tour events to hoist the hardware on Super Bowl Sunday.
This week, the Waste Management Phoenix Open delivered on all fronts with its entertainment value as well as some dramatic and exciting golf. Fan favorite Jordan Spieth returned for his second start since undergoing wrist surgery back in August as he finished in a tie for fourth place. Adidas Golf brand ambassador Daniel Berger also had a spectacular week, posting rounds of 68, 66, 66, and 67. Berger, who missed almost the entire 2023 season as a result of a bulging disc injury, is now finally seeing some results of his hard work with a T2 finish in the desert.
University of California product Michael Kim had a solid week as the 2018 John Deere Classic winner finished in a tie for second place. Just ahead of Kim was Justin Thomas, who ended his week on a high note by holing out from the fairway on his 72nd hole for a two on the long par 4. This bumped him up to a tie for sixth place.
This week was ultimately all about Thomas Detry. Watching his swing, it was as smooth as his scores and a wonder why he hasn’t won a lot more before now. Thomas Detry is a member of both the European Tour and the PGA Tour but has only won once in the states in 2016 on the Challenge Tour but never on the PGA Tour. Thomas posted scores of 66, 64, and 65 leading into Sunday and absolutely ran away from the field. Standing on 18 tee, he held a six shot lead. After birdieing 15, 16, and 17, he proceeded to not let off the gas and drained his fourth straight birdie to win by seven strokes. Thomas Detry will now be exempt into all 2025 Majors in addition to the remaining PGA Tour events.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads back to Torrey Pines for the Genesis Invitational as result of the LA fires.
