Players Distance Like Never Before: TaylorMade Introduces All-New P·790 Irons

CARLSBAD, CATaylorMade writes the latest chapter in the P·Series irons story with the release of the all-new P·790™ irons. Dubbed as the irons that created a category of their own, Players Distance, the new P·790 irons deliver increased carry distance, premium forged feel, and a larger sweet spot to give golfers added consistency and performance.

P·790 irons will be available for preorder on Feb. 18 at TaylorMadeGolf.com and available for purchase in retail outlets on Mar. 13 for $1,399.99 USD in steel shafts and $1,499.99 USD in graphite shafts for a seven-piece set.

A New Face Material for More Speed, More Consistently

The all-new P·790 irons utilize a new forged face material – 4340M. This material is 20% stronger, allowing engineers to design the face thinner and faster than previous models. These properties increase the coefficient of restitution (COR). As a result, golfers experience faster ball speeds and longer carry distances.#

Compared to the previous model of P·790 irons, the use of 4340M material allows golfers to realize up to a 24% larger sweet spot*. This translates to consistent distance from the top of the set to the bottom.

# Ball speed and distance claim based on player testing vs. 2023 P790.

* Comparison vs. 2023 P·790 7-iron.

Individual Head Optimization for Premium Forged Feel

A primary goal in the design of P·790 irons was to deliver exceptional feel and sound. Through the use of T-modal analysis, each head has been strategically engineered to control the frequencies that ultimately dictate feel and sound at impact.

Easy Launch and More Stability

  • The all-new P·790 irons are also some of the most stable TaylorMade has ever made. That’s due to strategic repositioning of up to 40g of tungsten internally, and FLTD CG™ that positions the CG lowest in long irons for easier launch and playability, and progressively higher in the shorter irons for precise spin, distance and trajectory control. Tungsten weighting has been moved lower in the long irons, thus lowering the CG.
  • As the set progresses up through the 7-iron, the tungsten weight shifts closer to the toe. This increases both stability and MOI in the middle of the set, further enhancing forgiveness and delivering consistent distance and overall performance.
  • Tungsten isn’t found in the 8-iron through pitching wedge allowing the CG to sit higher in the head where it enhances control.

Proven TaylorMade Technologies

  • Thick-Thin Back Wall Construction features honeycombed cutouts puzzled across the internal back wall to remove excess weight from above the strike zone. This allows engineers to strategically position more weight lower in the clubhead to achieve consistent performance characteristics. In short, mass placement has been optimized in each individual club.
  • A Thru-Slot Speed Pocket™ is also found in the 4-7 irons. This feature expands the sweet spot toward the lower part of the face where most mishits occur and protects ball speeds which ultimately translates to consistent distance.
  • SpeedFoam™ Air also fills the hollow body construction of P·790 irons further ensuring the crisp, responsive feel golfers desire.

Players Shaping

  • P·790 irons have been upgraded with a new premium player’s inspired shape that is both inviting and aspirational. The topline width has slimmed down while each sole has been uniquely designed. The long irons feature an increased sole radius with a progressive beveled leading edge through the set for consistent turf interaction and improved impact locations.
  • Aesthetically, the P·790 logo is centered on the back of P·790 irons instead of on the bottom heel where it’s been found in previous generations. This new location is in line with the rest of the P·Series family.
  • Each head features a Tour Satin Scratch finish providing an elegant, clean look. The backbar has a mirrored finish. Machined texture is found just below the centered P·790 logo adding to the rich, high-end visual presentation.

Specs

P·790 irons are available in 4-iron through approach wedge in both right and left-handed. The stock steel shaft is the KBS Tour which is available in regular, stiff and extra-stiff flex. The stock graphite shaft is the Mitsubishi Chemical MMT in 75S, 65R and 55A. The stock grip is the Golf Pride Z-Grip 52g 0.580 (Black/Grey). Shaft customization and upgrades are available at TaylorMadeGolf.com.

San Diego, CA – Ludvig Åberg has won the 2025 Genesis Invitational.  With a final round of 66, he would score 12-under for the tournament.  This marks his second PGA Tour title.  Along with the win, and 700 FedEx Cup points (enough to move into the top spot), he earned $4 million in tournament earnings.

Due to the recent fires in the Los Angeles area, this year the Genesis invitational was moved to be played at Torrey Pines, the same location that hosted the Farmer’s Insurance Open just a few weeks ago.  While historically this tournament has been held at Riviera, the change in scenery didn’t affect Åberg for the worse.

For most of the day, it seemed that Maverick McNealy was destined to earn his second PGA Tour title.  After shooting a 30 on the front nine of his final round, it seemed like the tournament was his to lose.  However, Åberg dug deep to pull out the win.  He went four under in his last six holes, culminating with a birdie putt on the last to snatch the tournament by a single stroke.  McNealy’s lone bogey of the day on his 14th hole is the only thing that kept him from being in a playoff for the title.  He would would finish just one behind with a score of 11-under.

Being a signature event on the PGA Tour, there was serious star-power nipping at Åberg’s heels.  Those names included the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Tommy Fleetwood and Tony Finau.  Scheffler would go finish in third at 9-under par, while the other three would all finish in a tie for fourth place, at 8-under par.

The next PGA Tour event will be an international one, The Mexico Open at VidantaWorld in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.  There, Jake Knapp will be headlining the group of competitors as the defending champion.  While many of the top players will be taking a week off following Genesis, Knapp won’t be the only one playing.  The field will also include the likes of Akshay Bhatia, Padraig Harrington, Nicolai Hojgaard, and the 17-year-old Blades Brown.

PXG Unveils the New PXG Black Ops Ultra Lite Driver — A Game-Changer for Golfers Seeking Speed and Forgiveness

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – PXG, the world-class golf equipment and apparel company, has expanded its award-winning PXG Black Ops Collection with the introduction of the PXG® Black Ops® Ultra Lite Driver. This exceptional new offering is engineered to benefit amateur golfers with slower swing speeds. The result: a much lighter club that is easy to swing and for many players easier to swing faster!

The PXG Black Ops Ultra Lite Driver features a lightweight design with a clubhead mass of 189 grams, which is 14 grams lighter than the standard PXG Black Ops Driver. The clubhead mass is also adjustable between 179 grams and 196.5 grams leveraging PXG’s signature Precision Weighting Technology. With a single rear weight port, this driver has a deeper center of gravity (CG) that increases both forgiveness and consistency and enhances stability.

The new driver also features PXG’s proprietary AMF (Advanced Material Face) Technology. Optimized with a variable thickness design, the face delivers increased ball speed for more distance. The non-uniform bulge and roll face design is refined and manufactured consistently through robotic polishing to adjust the horizontal and vertical curvatures across the face strategically. This face design supports enhanced forgiveness and improves overall performance by optimizing the club’s reaction to off-center hits.

A high-strength composite body construction manufactured from high-grade carbon fiber using a sophisticated compression molding process helps improve weight distribution within the clubhead to increase the moment of inertia (MOI) and push the center of gravity (CG) lower and further back.

With the addition of the new PXG Black Ops Ultra Lite Driver, the PXG Black Ops Driver Collection now includes three head designs tailored to a wide range of players. The original PXG Black Ops Driver delivers a high launch, low-spin option, ensuring unmatched ball speed and exceptional forgiveness for optimum performance. The PXG Black Ops Tour-1 Driver features a tour-inspired head design with a taller face and a more curved crown, creating an aggressive look and maximizing distance with a penetrating ball flight for advanced players. The new PXG Black Ops Ultra Lite Driver rounds out the award-winning collection with a lightweight design that appeals to golfers looking to add both speed and forgiveness to their game off the tee.

“Whether you play like a pro or an average Joe, we’re committed to having a high-performance setup that will help you play your best and have a good time,” said PXG Founder and CEO Bob Parsons. “The expansion of the PXG Black Ops Driver Collection to include a lightweight option is case in point. There are a lot of players out there who will benefit from this clubhead design, and we’re thrilled to give them what they need.”

Golf Pride Unveils ALIGN MAX: The Next Evolution in Raised Ridge Grip Technology

PINEHURST, NC – Golf Pride, a leading innovator in golf equipment and maker of the world’s most popular golf grips, introduces ALIGN MAX, revolutionary grip technology designed to help players of all skill levels maintain consistent hand placement throughout the swing.

ALIGN technology debuted in 2017, with the first raised ridge design pulling in a number of players on Tour and a strong amateur fanbase. It quickly became one of the most successful grip technologies in Golf Pride history. Even with these accolades, the brand heard feedback about the desire for an even more pronounced ridge. This inspired the creation of ALIGN MAX, a second-generation design that supplements the original by offering an alternative featuring a 25-percent higher ridge to achieve the maximum desired feel and consistency. It also includes a longer ridge that runs from top-to-bottom of the grip, providing players flexibility to adjust their hand placement for any shot.

“Our brand purpose is to design grips for the hands of all golfers that will inspire a feeling of confidence so they can perform their best,” says James Ledford, President of Golf Pride. “With ALIGN MAX we reached new heights of what is possible in grip design, resulting in breakthrough technology that provides golfers the confidence their hands are in the right place every shot, for unparalleled consistency.”

Over the past seven years, ALIGN has acquired a worldwide following, including at the highest levels of professional golf. It has been part of numerous victories and major championships across all major global Tours. Following in its footsteps, ALIGN MAX recently won its PGA Tour debut at the Farmers Insurance Open.

ALIGN MAX will not replace the original ALIGN, rather it is an additional option for players who prefer to maximize the benefits of raised ridge technology, which include:

  • Consistent Hand Placement: Fits into the hand’s natural contours, promoting consistent hand placement and alignment.
  • Clubface Awareness: Enhances face angle awareness at set up and throughout the swing, promoting a square clubface.
  • Player Confidence: Consistent hand placement helps facilitate a more repeatable swing, which helps build greater confidence.

ALIGN MAX is now available in MCC and MCC Plus4 grip models in both standard and midsize at all major retailers and online stores.

Mitsubishi Golf Launches Diamana RB Shaft

CARLSBAD, CA – Mitsubishi Golf today revealed Diamana RB, the final member of the 6th Generation Diamana family. Diamana RB (Red Board) continues to promote the storied brand with its legendary iconography, including the return of the surfboard, flower bands and even the 63/73/83 weight class designations. Diamana RB also features the most advanced technological package ever assembled in a Diamana structure.

As with all Red Mitsubishi structures, Diamana RB is a Mid to Mid-High Launch, mid spin product. Diamana RB uses some proven technologies from previous Diamana generations like Consistent Feel Design to simplify fitting processes and our Xlink Tech Resin System to drastically bolster carbon fiber volume and increase the shaft’s overall strength. Diamana RB, like WB and BB makes use of Mitsubishi Chemical’s 80-ton DIALEAD pitch fiber in the handle to support increased energy transfer to the ball at impact for more ball speed, a full-length use of aerospace-grade MR70 carbon fiber for added strength, and a new orientation of plies in the tip section to drive down torque for tighter downrange dispersion with today’s high MOI clubheads.

The Diamana RB also provides a more active tip-section than either the WB or BB to provide increased launch with RB – making this a truly unique and the most versatile profile in the series.

“Diamana RB brings our most iconic brand’s latest series to its conclusion. What has always made Diamana so special was the surfboards, the flowers, the Hawaiian themes and the Blue, White, and now Red colored board to signify the profile and performance in the series. It’s true to our brand DNA and the entire team could not be more excited to continue with the success of the first two Profiles with RB.” said Mark Gunther, Senior Director of Sales and Marketing.

Diamana RB uses the same robust technological package throughout the series, but Diamana will never stray too far from its purpose of creating the smoothest feel and most consistent performance possible. Feel and consistency is what made Diamana what it is today, and that will never change.

Phoenix, Arizona – Belgian golfer Thomas Detry captures his third professional win but his first PGA Tour victory.  Thomas held off a wildly popular leaderboard at one of the most raucous PGA Tour events to hoist the hardware on Super Bowl Sunday.

This week, the Waste Management Phoenix Open delivered on all fronts with its entertainment value as well as some dramatic and exciting golf.  Fan favorite Jordan Spieth returned for his second start since undergoing wrist surgery back in August as he finished in a tie for fourth place.  Adidas Golf brand ambassador Daniel Berger also had a spectacular week, posting rounds of 68, 66, 66, and 67.  Berger, who missed almost the entire 2023 season as a result of a bulging disc injury, is now finally seeing some results of his hard work with a T2 finish in the desert.

University of California product Michael Kim had a solid week as the 2018 John Deere Classic winner finished in a tie for second place.  Just ahead of Kim was Justin Thomas, who ended his week on a high note by holing out from the fairway on his 72nd hole for a two on the long par 4.  This bumped him up to a tie for sixth place.

This week was ultimately all about Thomas Detry.  Watching his swing, it was as smooth as his scores and a wonder why he hasn’t won a lot more before now.  Thomas Detry is a member of both the European Tour and the PGA Tour but has only won once in the states in 2016 on the Challenge Tour but never on the PGA Tour.  Thomas posted scores of 66, 64, and 65 leading into Sunday and absolutely ran away from the field.  Standing on 18 tee, he held a six shot lead.  After birdieing 15, 16, and 17, he proceeded to not let off the gas and drained his fourth straight birdie to win by seven strokes.  Thomas Detry will now be exempt into all 2025 Majors in addition to the remaining PGA Tour events.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads back to Torrey Pines for the Genesis Invitational as result of the LA fires.

CARLSBAD, CA Today PUMA GOLF® announced the PUMA GOLF x REALTREE collaboration, which includes a lineup of golf apparel including polos, footwear, rain gear, a hoodie, and more. New Adizero ZG Offers Golfers Performance Footwear That’s Light All Round

CARLSBAD, CA – adidas wants golfers to know that light isn’t always less, it’s more. Today the brand is reintroducing the Adizero franchise to golf with Adizero ZG, a new spikeless performance footwear model aimed to enhance stability, traction and comfort while fighting against foot fatigue by being light all round. The new footwear are offered in both laced and BOA® options for men and women and are available on adidas.com, the adidas app and at select retailers worldwide.

In seeking to build upon the success of the ZG footwear franchise, adidas learned that core golfers average 162 hours per year on their feet. Spending that much time could lead to foot fatigue and ultimately less desire to get out on the course. With Adizero ZG, adidas introduces some key updates to help provide golfers with a lightweight solution so they can focus on that next round.

“A golfer’s feet and footwear are extremely critical to not only the swing but also their overall enjoyment of the round,” said Masun Denison, global footwear director, adidas Golf. “Adizero ZG represents the next step on our journey to provide golfers with a lightweight option that has technology specifically focused on tackling those important areas like traction, stability and comfort, all in a spikeless silhouette.”

The new Adizero ZG footwear introduces key technologies to provide more efficiency from the ground up:

Lightweight Traction

  • New lightweight undercut lugs along the perimeter of the SPIKEMORE outsole aim to offer golfers increased lateral stability and adaptive traction so that they react to what the golfer needs based on lie and terrain
  • A secondary cone-shaped traction system helps golfers feel flat on uneven terrain and is anti-clogging to help maximize traction overall

Lightweight Comfort

  • adidas combined LIGHTSTRIKE and LIGHTSTRIKE PRO cushioning in the midsole to help golfers feel comfortable and close to the ground
  • In addition to an engineered tongue and INSITE™ 2.0 sockliner, Adizero ZG also features a molded heel cushion, which was inspired by the running category and provides softer and targeted padding to help offer a better fit and improved comfort

Dynamic Motion

  • A newly designed DYNAMIC TORSION plate in the outsole extends from the midfoot into the forefoot in specific areas to help golfers with rebound, but also to avoid rollover and power leak in the follow through of the swing
  • Design provides additional arch support to promote smooth walking, ultimately helping to reduce fatigue both during and after the round
  • To help the footwork throughout the swing, adidas also made the medial side of the outsole curved and softer while the lateral side has a sharper outside edge

The waterproof upper of Adizero ZG features adidas’ premium SPRINTSKIN material. This multi-layer upper is made up of high-performance materials to specifically give golfers an adaptive and athletic look while still being lightweight. adidas also included a heel clip in the upper to give golfers a locked-in feel and another layer of stability.

As part of the Adizero ZG range, adidas is introducing a BOA model for men and women to provide another option for improved fit and performance. adidas collaborated with the BOA Technology team to create a PRIMEKNIT sock-like construction so that golfers can slip the footwear on and then dial-in their fit with the micro-adjustable Li2 dial. With the BOA Fit System hidden throughout the upper, it offers golfers a clean and athletic look to go along with a customized fit.

The new Adizero ZG will be available in a variety of colorways in laced and BOA versions for both men and women, including a junior model inspired by the footwear.

Rory McIlroy Wins 2025 Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Pebble Beach, CA – Rory McIlroy (-21) won the 2025 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, finishing two strokes ahead of fellow Irishman Shane Lowry.  He entered the final round one stroke behind Sepp Straka, tied with Lowry.  He fired a final round 66 to claim his first career victory at Pebble Beach and 27th overall on the PGA Tour.

McIlroy overpowered the golf course and the field, showing how much of a weapon his driver is and also that he is nearly unbeatable when he puts everything together.  With the Masters Tournament starting to come into focus, all eyes will be on Rory to see how his game trends in the coming weeks and months.  Justin Rose and Lucas Glover finished T3 at -18.  Straka shot a disappointing final round 72 to drop down to a T7 finish alongside Tom Kim at -16.

After a fairly lackluster start to the PGA Tour season, golf fans were treated to an exciting event that checked all the boxes:  A great golf course in challenging conditions, a field featuring several of the world’s best, and arguably the best player of his generation in it until the very end.  Plus no football to compete with for TV viewership.

Pebble is one of the older golf courses on the PGA Tour and has the smallest greens on tour, on average.  Pair that with exposed green sites and coastal winds gusting up to 30 mph and you have a recipe for challenging and exciting golf, a true test for the world’s best.

Other players who had notable performances included world number one Scottie Scheffler (T9, -15) who was making his season debut after recovering from a freak kitchen accident which left him needing stitches on his palm; Cam Davis finished T5 at -17 alongside Russell Henley, after a remarkable up and down from the tree roots on 18.

A no cut signature event, not all of the notables in the field performed well.  Ludvig Aberg withdrew with illness after firing a 77 in the first round; last year’s champion and course record holder Wyndham Clark finished T68 at even par; and one-time Pebble specialist Jordan Spieth struggled, finishing T74 at +3.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads to the desert for the WM Phoenix Open.  Nick Taylor memorably won last year’s edition in a playoff.  He will defend his title against a field that includes players such as Tom Kim, Hideki Matsuyama, Scottie Scheffler, and Justin Thomas.
