I have been a standard Tour Velvet with a tape buildup player for years; however, the concept of the Jumbomax grip very much intrigued me. I bought one XL grip and installed it on my 7-iron. I fully tested it out on the range and played with it. The fulness of the grip felt great in my hands at address and during the swing. I didn’t noticeably change my grip pressure, but I certainly felt less tension in my forearms. Generally, I liked the grip; however, I did lose 7-iron distance, and within a short period of time the surface of the grip was showing more than expected wear at the point where the forefinger/thumb of the lower hand contacts the grip. I eventually decided to remove the grip and continue with my standard setup. Time passed and time came to regrip my clubs. I was still intrigued with the oversized grips and sampled a GP multi-compound +4 Midsize and built up the tape to my liking on my 7-iron and reinstalled the Jumbomax XL on my 6-iron. I just felt like I missed something on the first testing and needed to try again. This time I wasn’t using any of the other clubs … just the test clubs. This allowed me to play with how I gripped the club transitioning from a “fingers” grip to a weak palm grip to a one knuckle semi-palm grip. This also gave me a chance to experiment with wrist hinge. To make a long story shorter … the testing proved quite beneficial. By altering how I gripped the club to mesh better with the grip and widening my stance slightly all of my measurables improved using the oversized grips … distance, dispersion, launch angle, decent angle, spin, ball speed, smash factor … all better and more consistent. So, which grip did I choose? I chose the Jumbomax XL Lite. Both grips tested felt great, but the Jumbomax XL I tested did take away some clubhead awareness due to its weight, but actually felt better than the GP +4 Midsize because I didn’t have to use 5 layers of tape to build it up where i wanted it. I am still a little concerned about the durability of the Jumbomax grip surface at the forefinger/thumb (lower hand) contact point. These grips are a little pricey to need changing more than twice a year. However, I do practice and play much more than the average amateur player, so this likely won’t be an issue for most.

Hey Jeff!

I’m stoked that you liked them! They certainly fill up your hand nicely, that’s for sure. They seem to be a nice combo between old-school and new-school feel.

Thanks for reading!

Drew
