Xander Schauffele Wins 2024 PGA Championship
Louisville, KY – Xander Schauffele (-21) won the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla. It is his first career major victory, achieved in wire-to-wire fashion. Schauffele entered the day tied for the lead with Collin Morikawa. While Morikawa couldn’t get any putts to go in, Xander kept his foot down and posted an impressive 65. Needing birdie on the last to win outright and avoid a playoff with Bryson DeChambeau, Schauffele answered the bell.
Bryson finished runner-up and showed that his game is as well-rounded as anyone and that some of the best golfers in the world do in fact ply their trade on LIV, as it stands.
Entering the final round, there were six players within three strokes of Schauffele and Morikawa, who were tied for the lead was at -15. Bryson was one of those, and he fired an impressive round of 64 to vault himself into contention. Viktor Hovland was another player who had a big week. One of the game’s elite tee to green players, he has struggled this year and finally seemed to break out of his slump. He finished solo third at -18. Thomas Detry finished T4, along with Morikawa, at -15.
Secondary to the result, the biggest story of the week came Friday morning when a tragic accident took place where a pedestrian died after being struck by a bus. In the chaos that ensued, world number one Scottie Scheffler was arrested and ended up being booked into jail before being released in time to make it back to the golf course for his tee time. He would fire an incredibly impressive 66 before things seemed to catch up with him on Saturday. He bounced back in a big way Sunday, shooting 65 to finish T8.
The golf course yielded low scores for a major championship, with Schauffele opening with a round of 62, his second career 62 in a major. He now owns two of the four lowest rounds in major championship history. Shane Lowry also shot 62 on Saturday en route to a T6 finish.
Unfortunately, not all of the big names excelled this week, and several failed to make the cut. Jon Rahm, Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, and Matt Fitzpatrick were among the favorites who missed the cut. Patrick Cantlay, Cameron Smith, Tyrrell Hatton, and Jason Day made the cut but weren’t competitive on the weekend.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to historic Colonial CC in Fort Worth, Texas for the Charles Schwab Challenge. Emiliano Grillo is the defending champion and will compete against a field that includes Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, and Viktor Hovland.
